Thank You Caroline Stone
Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance are saying a big thank you to Caroline Stone after she took on a truly explosive challenge to raise money for her local air ambulance.
The challenge – to walk the Landmannalauger route, across the southern highlands, through one of the most actively volcanic areas of Iceland.
Caroline said: “The terrain was difficult, with the first day being the most extremely challenging with a 10-11 hour trek.
“Throughout the trek we encountered steep climbs across lava fields, passing steaming vents, then onto snow fields, where trekking was challenging as the snow moves and slides beneath your feet and long downhill descents over scree. We experienced river crossings, wading through ice cold streams – some up to your thighs – and crossing a river by a footbridge that we needed to climb down to using a rope.
“The days were long, which was not helped by the fact that darkness only lasts for 2-3 hours at night and even then it is only grey in the midnight sun, (eye mask required for sleep). We pitched our tents up for the night before having our evening meal, on one of the evening in heavy rain and blustery winds, so done with great difficulty and that nights evening meal was not until around 11:30pm.
“The total distance walked was about 58km.
“This was a total new experience for me and one I will never forget.”
