After a week of intense trekking, shop volunteer Shamim Khan has returned from the adventure of a lifetime, a challenge across the historic and dramatic terrain of the Great Wall of China, raising funds to support the lifesaving missions of The Air Ambulance Service (TAAS).
Shamim’s expedition took her and a team of fellow fundraisers through daily walks of more than six hours, covering in total more than 3,300m of ascent and tackling steep inclines, dramatic descents and rugged terrain, testing both fitness and nerves.
“I have returned from the most wonderful adventure of my life! I still can’t quite believe I can tick it off my bucket list!!” said Shamim. “I knew I would love the great vistas and stunning scenery around the Great Wall but didn’t realise I was going to meet so many amazing and inspiring people along the way.”
The route included sections where the wall had significantly eroded, meaning participants needed good balance and a head for heights, and Shamim was well‑prepared, thanks to months of training supported by friends and family.
Despite the challenge, the weather was in their favour, mostly dry and sunny, with some snow in the higher altitude sections. The views from watch towers, across mountain ridges and shades of deep blue, made a lasting impression.

The final day proved the most strenuous. Climbers ascended the so‑called “Heavenly Staircase” up to the “Heroes’ Platform” – the steepest part of the climb – where despite mist and fatigue the sense of accomplishment was immense.
Shamim said: “The sense of achievement I had in reaching my goal, in order to raise vital funds for our helicopters cannot be surpassed. Going that extra mile is what the Air Ambulance is all about!”
Having walked more than ten miles daily for a full week, Shamim completed the challenge injury‑free, and even joined a smaller group for an additional stretch along a derelict part of the Wall.
Shamim’s fundraising efforts support TAAS’s critical mission of providing rapid response and advanced medical care to serious incidents across five counties. We also operate the National Children’s Air Ambulance (NCAA) helping critically ill children and babies across the UK. Every donation helps keep the charity’s helicopters flying and crews ready.
