Care And Compassion For Over 20 Years
Discover how our journey has shaped the lifesaving charity we are today.
From our very first mission with Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA) in 2003, to the launch of Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) in 2008, and the introduction of the Children’s Air Ambulance in 2012 — every step has been powered by purpose, passion, and partnership.
Over the past two decades, we’ve grown into a unified service that delivers the highest quality critical care to patients of all ages — locally and nationally.
And it all began in 2002.

EARLY BEGINNINGS
Our story began in 2002, when former chairman Malcolm Hazell founded the charity under the name Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA).
In tribute to a legacy of compassion and service, the charity’s first helicopter was dedicated as “The Diana, Princess of Wales Air Ambulance.”

VOLUNTEERS
In the early days, our lifesaving missions were made possible by the incredible commitment of volunteers.
We began flying using a helicopter leased from Sloane Helicopters, with dedicated doctors volunteering their time to crew the aircraft outside of their NHS shifts.
Their passion and selflessness laid the foundations for the expert care we continue to deliver today.

REBRANDING & GROWTH
2004 marked a turning point in our journey. The reference to “The Diana, Princess of Wales Air Ambulance” was retired, and the service formally became known as Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA) — the name that would become trusted across the region.
With an ambitious goal to raise £1 million, the charity established key income streams including a lottery scheme and textile bag collections, which provided a vital source of regular funding. From the start, the support of local communities played a crucial role in sustaining the service.
To ensure patients could still receive critical care when the helicopter was grounded, WNAA leased two Rapid Response Vehicles (RRVs) from Rover — an early version of today’s critical care cars. Paramedics were seconded from NHS ambulance services, delivering expert care on the ground when every second mattered.

SECURING THE SKIES
By mid-2005, thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters, the charity had raised enough funds to cover the full lease of the helicopter — a major milestone in securing the future of our lifesaving service.
Read moreAt this time, all paramedics were still seconded from NHS ambulance services, while dedicated doctors continued to volunteer their time, working shifts outside of their NHS roles.
The support from the community was growing steadily:
-
200 donors giving via standing order raised £9,000
-
Our Gold Fundraising Members collectively raised an outstanding £1.26 million
-
The charity’s lottery scheme reached £8,000 in income
These early contributions laid a strong financial foundation — helping us build a resilient, community-backed emergency service that would continue to evolve and expand.

PROGRESS & INNOVATION
In 2006, the charity entered a new chapter of growth and modernisation.
A newly leased helicopter, G-MEDS, arrived at Coventry Airport, becoming the latest aircraft to serve Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA). This marked a significant step forward in enhancing our operational capabilities.

YEAR ROUND SUPPORT
Just three years after its launch, Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA) reached a major operational milestone — delivering lifesaving care 365 days a year.

That same year, WNAA gained national recognition, featuring on the Discovery Channel in a documentary focused on emergency care. This visibility helped raise awareness of the vital work we do and the impact of our service in real-time emergencies.

EXPANDING OUR REACH
In 2008, Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA) expanded its mission by taking over operations for the newly established Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) — bringing the same standard of lifesaving, rapid-response care to even more communities across the Midlands.

Together, WNAA and DLRAA formed a stronger, united front — committed to delivering advanced pre-hospital care wherever it’s needed most.
