When Derby market trader Stuart Morris was given a collection of unwanted magazines to sell for charity he thought he was doing a one-off good deed. However, local people liked the idea so much that soon his bookstall was being given hundreds of magazines and books a month to raise money for Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA).
Since the initiative started in 2012 Stuart has raised £6,000 for the lifesaving charity with another £4,000 donated by an anonymous customer.nnHe has run his stall Eagle Books, at the Intu Shopping centre, for 20 years but his inspiration for supporting the charity came from his previous job as a sales rep which involved spending a lot of time travelling on motorways.
“I decided to support the local air ambulance because doing so much driving made me realise that any of us might need the services of the charity at any time if we are involved in a serious road accident. The charity receives no government funding and relies completely on donations to keep the helicopter flying,” explained Stuart.
On presentation of the funds to DLRAA, Stuart paid tribute to all of the people who have supported his fundraising initiative over the years by donating books and magazines, and to Intu Derby for providing the stall for the charity sale.
