Joyce's story

Joyce was born 88 years ago and was one of seven children born to George and Nelli Padgett. She moved to Melton when she was a young child and where she made her home. By all accounts she and her siblings enjoyed a very happy childhood. We have heard tales of swimming in the river where Petfoods is now and jumping off Swing bridge, playing tennis and running around the streets of terraced houses. After leaving school, her first job was at Woolworths where she had so much fun and made many friends. The job she will always be remembered for though was for Melton Borough Council, where she worked for many years. She joined them as a receptionist and retired twenty-five years ago as Chief Cashier in the Treasury Department and again she loved her working life because she loved being among people. Our mum enjoyed a long and happy retirement. Our dad Bill Sherwood died eighteen years ago and mum, being the strong, resourceful woman that she was made a new life for herself. She had a passion for gardening and worked tirelessly to create her beautiful garden. She was an avid reader, and it was difficult to find books she hadn’t already read! Our mum became unwell at the beginning of February resulting in her first ever trip to hospital apart from childbirth. She received excellent care, but she hated the loss of her independence and just wanted to come home which she did and there she remained until she passed peacefully away on 7th March.
