Derek's story

Derek Shilton sadly passed away on Tuesday 26th September 2023 following a short illness surrounded by all his family.
Born in 1937, Derek was a twin. His mother, Eth had no idea she was expecting twins until Derek was born 20 minutes after his brother Keith. Derek had many stories to tell about his life to his children Nicola and Zoe and their partners Martin and Terry, grandchildren Ryan, Callum, Carly, Harriet, Olivia, Jack and Alex and his 11 great grandchildren or anyone who was interested or listened. In fact he wrote an autobiography of his life titled 'Glenhill'. Derek lived through the war, completed National Service and an apprenticeship with Jaguar Daimler, emigrated to California, USA with his family before returning to the UK and eventually settling at his home in Glendower Avenue where he would stay for the end of his working life and retirement. He shared his home with his partner Dibbs during his retirement, loving time in his lodge in Swanage and watching their greyhounds run.
Derek was an amazing and devoted dad and an extremely hard worker, having 4 jobs at one time to ensure he provided for his family. He always made time for his children and maintained an amazing relationship with them and their families throughout his life.
In Derek’s book he wrote “I have no regrets whatsoever. Life is not about how much wealth you can accumulate it is about what you do with this most precious gift of all – life itself”. He believed heaven was here on earth, in many forms, all around us. He worked hard to find it each day. Derek lived the best life he could.
Derek was everyone’s friend and will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all that knew him.
