A new £600,000 helipad at Hull Royal Infirmary means patients transferred to the hospital by the Children’s Air Ambulance will receive the specialist treatment they urgently need more quickly than ever.
Before the new helipad – funded by the charity HELP Appeal – was opened helicopters had to land on a grass area on the other side of the hospital car park and patients were then driven to Hull Royal Infirmary in an ambulance along one of the busiest roads in the city centre – adding up to 15 minutes onto the transfer time.
Now the helicopter lands behind the Emergency Department, which is a quick trolley push on a concrete walkway, to take the specially designed Children’s Air Ambulance stretcher straight into the hospital.
Having the helipad so close to the hospital also means that seriously ill children at Hull Royal Infirmary who need specialist paediatric services in other hospitals will have a quicker transfer to where they need to be.
