Sylvia's story

Sylvia was brought up in rural Carmarthenshire. Until the age of 5 she spoke only Welsh at home, but when she started school soon learnt English. At age 11 she won a scholarship to Carmarthen Girls grammar school and did well there At 18 she entered a teacher's training college in Bristol. We met at a student ball and were soon dating regularly. We married in 1955 and had almost 70 years of married life together living mostly in Oxfordshire. We had two sons, now in their sixties, and a foster son who sadly died when he was 35.
Sylvia was a resourceful lady with a "hands-on" approach to life. She loved handicrafts and was a talented knitter, hand knitting sweaters for all the family
For 20 years we had a narrowboat and she really enjoyed canal cruising in the Midlands.
When at home she was a regular member of the Anglican church in each of the three locations where we lived. and she played an active role in church social events.
