Nigel’s Story
Nigel suffered life-threatening injuries in October 2015 when his stationary car was hit by a van travelling over 60mph. It’s easy to understand why he has no memory of what happened after that point. Nigel was knocked unconscious on impact. His car spun and smashed into the rear of an articulated lorry. His vehicle was crushed and trapped underneath.
While firefighters battled to cut Nigel out of the car, your local air ambulance was deployed to the scene on the A38 in Sutton Coalfield. Our critical care team anaesthetised Nigel at the roadside to stabilise his condition. His skull was fractured in five places, he’d suffered a bilateral bleed on the brain and had a seizure. He also had four broken ribs.
Nigel was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham in just six minutes, which was crucial for his recovery. He credits the air ambulance for saving his life, saying, “I could have lost my life or ended up disabled if they hadn’t provided the treatment on scene. I am very lucky.”
After three days in intensive care and four months off work, he still suffers from hearing loss, tinnitus, balance issues, and dizziness. His experience highlighted the importance of supporting the air ambulance, a charity reliant on donations. Nigel urges everyone to contribute, emphasizing, “Every penny converts to life-saving seconds.” Your support makes rescues like Nigel’s possible. Thank you for your unwavering support.

Your local air ambulance adds a critical dimension by arriving on scene in minutes with a doctor and critical care paramedic on board ready to administer lifesaving care. I know they dramatically improved my chances of survival. Knowing that they are a charity and receive no government funding, it’s important that people raise as much money as they can to support the service.
When every second counts, we’re there.
Your donations helped us reach over 3,500 people who needed our help in 2023. Each rescue mission costs over £2,300, but your donation today, whatever the amount, will ensure we help more people in their time of need like Nigel.
Together, we save more lives.
