Warwickshire and Solihull Blood Bikes support charity’s lifesaving missions

Warwickshire and Solihull Blood Bikes deliver blood every evening to support the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA) and their lifesaving missions.
The Warwickshire and Solihull Blood Bikes are a charity ran by a dedicated group of volunteers who provide an essential and lifesaving service in Coventry, Warwickshire and Birmingham. The charity transports blood, medical products, as well as milk on specially adapted motorcycles and when needed in their hybrid response car.
There are 140 volunteers based in Warwickshire consisting of highly trained riders and support staff who generously give their time and skills to help others and together have recently completed their 20,000th delivery.
The team assist the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance by delivering blood to the charity’s airbase in Coventry every evening, ensuring that they are armed with lifesaving blood as well as the latest medical equipment they currently use.
“We are incredibly proud to have completed our 20,000th delivery and we would like to thank each and every member of our team of committed volunteers who understand the importance and urgency of transporting blood promptly, 24/7, seven days a week,” said Chrissie Smith, Warwickshire and Solihull Blood Bikes Chair.
“Our specially adapted motorcycles are able to navigate through traffic and reach our destinations swiftly, delivering the lifesaving supplies in record time.
“We are so pleased to be able to continue to support the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance so they can carry blood products in their helicopter and critical care car to provide to those in need,” she expressed.
The Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA) attends victims of major trauma, some of which suffer catastrophic bleeding and the partnership with the Warwickshire and Solihull Blood Bikes means those patients can be treated and given vital blood urgently giving them the best chance of survival or recovery.
Philippa Gibbs, WNAA Base Manager and Critical Care Paramedic said: “On behalf of the charity I would like to say thank you to everyone involved in the Warwickshire and Solihull Blood Bikes and for continuing to deliver blood to us every evening, seven days a week. Without this blood our patients wouldn’t be able to receive the treatment they so desperately need.”
“We have used the blood one hundred and eighty times since 2017 and this has enabled our highly trained crews to be able to provide pre-hospital emergency transfusions to those who need it most, giving them the very best chance of survival and recovery,” she added.
