TAAS champions International Men’s Day with insights from Associate Director of Operations
The Air Ambulance Service (TAAS) proudly supports International Men’s Day, emphasising the vital importance of men’s mental health and wellbeing. Chris Bailey, Associate Director of Operations at TAAS, shared his personal journey and insights during his feature on Kwik Fit in-centre Radio.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Chris spoke warmly of the profound influence his father had on his life. “From a young age, I dreamed of joining the military and joined the Royal Air Force for 23 years, inspired by my dad’s remarkable 30-year career in the Royal Navy. He was my hero—an inspirational figure who provided guidance, instilled resilience, and steered me in the right direction. We shared many moments playing sports together, which, looking back, was a powerful way to promote mental wellbeing. Though he’s no longer with us, his legacy continues to shape who I am,” Chris recalled.
Chris also provided thoughtful advice on maintaining mental wellbeing, stressing the importance of physical activity and open communication. “Staying mentally healthy is crucial, and for me, regular exercise is key—I often turn to cycling. But it’s not just about staying active; it’s about being open and honest with how we’re feeling. Men can be prone to bottling things up, keeping emotions locked away. We need to break that cycle,” he said.
Chris also highlighted the supportive environment within TAAS, where teams routinely face high-pressure and challenging situations. “Our crews at TAAS experience intense and, at times, traumatic scenarios. When they return from a mission, they debrief and discuss the clinical aspects, which often transitions naturally into conversations about life. This culture of openness is essential.
“We as men might meet up, have a drink and a chat about sport, but meaningful discussions about what’s really going on in our lives are what help us process and stay mentally healthy. For me, the combination of talking and staying active is fundamental to mental wellbeing,” Chris added.
International Men’s Day, celebrated annually on 19 November aims to spark positive conversations about men’s health, celebrate strong role models, and strengthen community bonds. It’s an opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable contributions men make to their families, workplaces, and society, while also addressing the unique challenges they face. Chris Bailey’s reflections are a powerful reminder of the importance of breaking down barriers around men’s mental health, fostering open dialogue, and prioritising wellness.
With advocates like Chris and the commitment of organisations such as The Air Ambulance Service, International Men’s Day underscores the importance of communication, connection, and a balanced approach to health. These efforts pave the way for a more compassionate, supportive, and resilient future for all.
