PAUL'S STORY
For Paul Quarterman, a passionate motocross rider, a routine day of riding turned into a nightmare when a jump went horribly wrong. His bike shot out of control, hurling him into a fence at nearly 80 mph, sending him flying nearly 100 feet. The impact caused severe fractures, internal bleeding, and dangerously low blood pressure. Paul’s life hung in the balance, but in the distance, he heard the sound of rotor blades – the air ambulance was coming.
Paul’s immediate hope came from the critical care team that arrived on scene within minutes. They began treating his injuries right away, but Paul’s situation was dire. His blood loss was rapid and severe. Fortunately, on that day, the helicopter was carrying lifesaving blood products – thanks to donors like you.
Since February 2022, our helicopters and critical care cars have been carrying essential blood products, including fresh frozen plasma and packed red cells, to help stabilise patients like Paul. These products are crucial in treating severe bleeding, replacing lost blood, and improving blood pressure. Paul was one of the 245 patients who received a pre-hospital blood transfusion, which helped replace his lost blood, stabilise his condition, and support his clotting as we raced him to a Major Trauma Centre.
Our ability to provide this service is only possible thanks to our incredible partnerships with University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire and Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre, along with the dedicated volunteers from Warwickshire & Solihull Blood Bikers and Leicestershire & Rutland Blood Bikers. These dedicated volunteers ensure that fresh blood products are available to us at all times, making sure that no lifesaving opportunity is missed. Any unused blood is safely returned to the hospital’s blood bank, ensuring no donations are wasted.
Paul’s survival is a powerful example of what can happen when communities come together to support lifesaving services like ours. But this care is only available because of your generosity.
