PENNY'S STORY
When a child is critically ill, every second counts. For families like Mandy’s, who faced the unthinkable when her granddaughter Penny became critically ill, a family holiday turned into a race to save her life and the Children’s Air Ambulance stepped in to take Penny to the care she needed.
Mandy shared: Last summer, my granddaughter Penny, who had already undergone a lifesaving liver transplant at just eight months, became critically ill during a family holiday in Whitby. We were told she needed urgent specialist care 162 miles away in Birmingham. A road journey wasn’t an option – Penny was too fragile, and every minute mattered.

They worked tirelessly with the Embrace Yorkshire and Humber Infant and Children’s Transport Service, flying Penny from Scarborough to Birmingham in just one hour. What would have been a stressful three-hour road journey, with possible delays, was reduced to mere minutes, saving precious time in her critical condition.
Penny’s mum, Grace, was able to fly alongside her in the parent seat, though she had her own concerns about the journey. As someone who struggles with travel sickness, she was reassured by the compassionate crew, knowing Penny was in the best hands.
Words can’t express how thankful we are to the Children’s Air Ambulance team. They didn’t just provide transportation – they provided hope and a chance for Penny to get the urgent surgery she needed. Today, Penny is doing well and recently celebrated her second birthday, surrounded by her loving family.
