Celebrating the women at the heart of The Air Ambulance Service

Today, on International Women’s Day, The Air Ambulance Service (TAAS) is celebrating the remarkable women at the heart of the organisation—women who are driving change, saving lives, and shaping the future of emergency medical care.
International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to accelerate gender equality and take meaningful steps toward a more inclusive future. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” highlights the urgency of driving real progress in gender equity, breaking down barriers, and ensuring that women have equal opportunities to lead, succeed, and thrive.
With 70% of its paid staff being female—an incredible 296 women—the charity is proud to be an organisation where women’s contributions are not just recognised but celebrated. Across every department, from its CEO and senior leadership team to critical care paramedics, doctors, crew members, airdesk, fundraising teams, retail staff, support functions, and volunteers, women play a pivotal role in ensuring the charity’s lifesaving services continue to operate effectively.
Even within traditionally male-dominated fields such as aviation and frontline emergency response, women are breaking barriers and setting new standards. Within the operations team alone, 40% of staff are female, demonstrating that women belong at every level of lifesaving pre-hospital care. Their expertise, compassion, and leadership continue to inspire future generations of women in aviation, healthcare, and the charity sector.
The organisation remains committed to fostering an inclusive workplace, where professional development, mentorship, and leadership opportunities are actively encouraged. By championing inclusivity and taking tangible steps to accelerate action on gender equality, TAAS ensures that every woman within the charity has the opportunity to lead, innovate, and make a difference.
“At TAAS, equality is not just an aspiration—it’s our reality. Women are at the forefront of innovation, leadership, and lifesaving work every single day. On International Women’s Day, we celebrate their incredible achievements and reaffirm our commitment to breaking barriers and empowering future generations,” says CEO Peta Wilkinson.
While International Women’s Day is a moment of celebration, it is also a reminder that change requires action. TAAS remains committed to ensuring that women are not only represented but are empowered to lead, with a workplace culture that supports and uplifts them. By accelerating action, the organisation aims to continue driving positive change both internally and across the wider sector.
The charity invites everyone to celebrate the extraordinary women within The Air Ambulance Service and beyond. By amplifying women’s voices, supporting gender equality initiatives, and recognising the achievements of women across all industries, there is an opportunity to create lasting impact.
