Local Volunteer Shortlisted for National Award
Moira Jackman, a long serving volunteer for your Local Air Ambulance and the mother of our New Shops Manager, Kerry Martin, has been shortlisted for the award of the Volunteer of the Year at this years Charity Retail Awards.
Moira has been a key part of opening many of our new boutique shops including Archway, Stow on the Wold, Abingdon, Banbury, Stamford, Milton Keynes and Headington.
Kerry Martin told us more about her Mother,
“My mum lost her husband a couple of years ago, and spends her time looking after her five grandchildren. She suffers with MS, and Addison’s Disease and has recently just recovered from Cancer herself (followed by heart surgery). As she lives away from me we decided that for a rest for her/break from looking after the kids she could come stay with me every couple of months to have some rest. This happened for a couple of stays but then one day she came into work with me to help out in the warehouse. Well she has not stopped since, and has now started ringing me asking when the next shop is coming up and when she is coming over!
Mum has helped me open many stores, and her biggest impact was in opening our new Additions store in Stow. We had our look and feel but couldn’t find anyone to do the works. Mum stepped in at the eleventh hour to make us our focus point – the quilted panels, as well as making feature frames, and all other parts of the store. When I am not opening shops she still comes to work but comes into the Warehouse and supports the team in getting shop orders ready for our shops, sorting stock and helping out wherever she is needed. She works a full day often not leaving until 5.30pm with me, which in itself is a long day but considering she normally has to have a rest in the afternoons at home, and when we go shopping has to go in a wheelchair because she cannot walk far is just amazing. When working with us, she just keeps on going like a Duracell bunny! I don’t know how she does it!
Considering her illness, the amount of tablets she is on, and the daily pain she suffers, she never lets it stop her. She is an inspiration to me and the people who work with her. Everyone always asks how my mum is and how amazing she is! So Proud!”
The winners will receive their awards during the ceremony at the Colwick Hall Hotel in Nottingham on 25th June as part of the Charity Retail Association Conference and Exhibition.
