MISSION CRITICAL: 27th Feb – 12th Mar

The past fortnight has been another extremely busy one for our night cars and helicopters, seeing them go to 190 missions in total.

Here’s a brief overview of what Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) and Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA) have been up to over the last week.

The most missions the services went to were road traffic collisions. These made up 39% of the 190.

Next highest was medical emergencies. These include things like cardiac arrest, seizures and strokes, and made up 25% of missions. DLRAA’s night car was called to one such incident in Kegworth last weekend, after a man in his 60s was suffering from an abnormally slow heart rate.

The crew joined East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) at the scene to assist, then travelled with them in the ambulance to take the man to hospital.

The man suffered a cardiac arrest during the journey, but was successfully resuscitated before being handed over to the team at Royal Derby Hospital for further treatment.

After those were missions that do not fit our usual categories. These were unusually high over the past fortnight, making up 21% of the total, and included a hospital transfer, among other things. One of the other missions took WNAA to Northampton after a man was hit by a 20-30ft tree after it was cut down.

The crew went to the scene of the accident to assist the man, who was in his 60s.

He had suffered potential injuries to his head, spine and chest. WNAA flew him to University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire for further assessment.

Falls, sports incidents and industrial accidents were all quite close in amount, making up 6%, 5% and 4% respectively.
